Are the cards going to be OK?

A friend of mine is cleaning out his house and he gave me a bunch of baseball cards from 1980 to the early 1990's. One problem: the cards are in the vinyl pages that have pvc in them which is unsafe for the cards. I gave away the cards that looked like there was already damage on them such as bubbling on the surface of the card or discoloring and kept the ones that look fine but the ones I kept still stink from being in the pages. Are the cards I kept fine and will the smell go away after a while or will they start to deteriorate like the ones I gave away? Is there a way to safely get rid of whatever is on the cards causing the smell?
